What to Look for When Buying an AI Laptop?

What is an AI-laptop anyway?

An AI-laptop is basically a regular laptop, but with extra hardware specifically designed for AI tasks. The key component? The NPU, or Neural Processing Unit. It's a separate chip that handles AI calculations, independent of your processor and graphics card.

Beyond that, AI-laptops offer software features like automatic image editing, speech recognition, and integrations with digital assistants. Handy, but here's the catch: almost every new laptop these days has some form of AI built in. The label "AI-laptop" is therefore often more marketing than a clear product category. What you actually get depends on the hardware underneath — and that's what we'll dive into.

What do you use an AI-laptop for?

This is actually the question you should start with. Not "which AI-laptop should I buy?", but "what do I want to do with it?" Because the use cases vary widely.

Work and study

In daily use, you'll notice AI mostly in the little things: automatically summarizing documents, smarter email suggestions, speech-to-text, or real-time translations. Many of these features run locally on the NPU. That's nice, because it works fast and your data stays on your own device.

Creative work

Working with photos, video, or audio? AI can take a lot of work off your plate. Think automatic photo editing, removing backgrounds from videos, or AI-assisted content creation. Good to know: for heavier creative applications, you'll need a powerful GPU alongside that NPU. We'll get to that in a moment.

Software development and experimenting with AI

A developer? Then an AI-laptop is an interesting playground. You can run smaller AI models locally, use AI tools for code generation and debugging, or experiment with machine learning. For larger models, you'll hit laptop limits — then you need more powerful hardware or a cloud solution.

Privacy

A major advantage of local AI: your data never leaves your laptop. No cloud, no external servers. It might sound like a detail, but for privacy-sensitive work it makes a big difference. Plus: it works without an internet connection.

Video calls

Even something as ordinary as a video call benefits from AI. Background blur, eye contact correction, noise suppression — those features run via the NPU and barely drain battery. Small, but nice.

What should you look for when buying?

Okay, now you know what an AI-laptop can do for you. But what should you pay attention to when you actually buy one? These are the six points that matter.

1. The processor: the brain of your laptop

Modern AI-laptops run on chips like Intel Core Ultra or AMD Ryzen AI, with a built-in NPU. What that means in practice: smoother AI features like speech recognition, more efficient power consumption, and better performance on light AI tasks. But — and this is important — for heavy AI applications, the CPU alone isn't enough. The processor lays the foundation, but the real power is elsewhere.

2. The GPU: the real power behind AI

Want to seriously work with AI? Then the GPU is crucial. AI models run largely on graphics processing power, and the difference between a laptop with and without a dedicated GPU is enormous. Without a GPU, you're limited to light applications. With an RTX 5070 inside, you've got a whole different story.

4. Storage: room to grow

AI tools, datasets, and local models take up considerable space. Go for at least 512 GB SSD, but if you want to work seriously with AI locally, 1 TB or more is really a must. 5. Battery and efficiency

There's an interesting tension here. AI chips like the NPU are designed to work efficiently. Small AI tasks use little battery, which is nice when you're on the go. But as soon as you use the GPU for heavier tasks, power consumption rises significantly. There's always a balance between performance and battery life — and that balance shifts depending on how you use the laptop.

6. Don't be misled by marketing

This might be the most important point in this entire article. Many laptops get the "AI" label because they have AI features in the operating system, contain an NPU, or offer smart camera and audio features. That's fine, but it doesn't automatically mean such a laptop is suitable for heavy AI applications.

The reality: for most people, AI is a handy addition on top of an already good laptop. Only when you really want to work with AI models — training, experimenting, running locally — do you need powerful, specific hardware.

Who is an AI-laptop suitable for?

That completely depends on what you're going to do with it.

Students and office users — A light laptop with AI features is more than enough. The Green 7 14 inch or Green 7 15 inch are ideal for that: AMD Ryzen AI processor, compact design, and great value for money.

An AI-laptop isn't a completely new type of device. It's a logical step in laptop evolution. AI hardware certainly adds something, but it's not the only thing that counts.
